Peter with Young Constituents outside Parliament

Over 50 young people from Hitchin and Harpenden gathered in the House of Commons on Monday night to meet Peter Lilley and learn how Parliament works.  The visit started with a question and answer session in the Committee Room and after the main discussion, Mr Lilley gave the constituents a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Peter Lilley said: “Yet again my annual invitation to the young constituents of Hitchin of Harpenden to the Houses of Parliament was well-received, with over 50 young people attending. We started with a discussion on how Parliament works, life as an MP and the political issues that concerned them, followed by a Q&A session with numerous questions ranging from whether we should have an elected House of Lords to tuition fees and educational standards.

“We then had an interesting discussion on the London riots after one young person asked whether they were symptomatic of a moral decline among modern youth. I responded that the riots happened because initial police inaction gave rioters the impression they could get away with looting.   A large number of those who took advantage of the opportunity already had a criminal record so one should not condemn all young people, the large majority of whom are law abiding citizens.

“It is always a pleasure to meet the young people in my constituency and hear their views and discuss the issues that concern then. Young constituents always bring new ideas and a new perspective, and I am always interested to know the issues that are most important to them.”
