LILLEY TO MEET ROYAL MAIL MANAGERS TO DISCUSS CHANGES IN LOCAL SERVICES

- Wednesday, 2nd May 2012

Postmen and women in the Hitchin area are currently introducing new delivery methods and revised routes, and Peter Lilley will be demanding that Royal Mail spell out exactly what these changes in delivery rounds will mean.   Peter will also seek renewed assurance that closure of the Harpenden sorting office will not mean redundancies or deprive people of a local point to pick up parcels.

Peter Lilley said: “I understand from Royal Mail that these changes are part of a UK-wide ‘modernisation programme’, however it is unclear what the specific changes will be and exactly which areas will be affected. The details in Royal Mail’s press release are vague on the time of day that customers should expect to receive their mail, and we don’t know whether the changes will result in any delay in delivery.

“Since the closure of the Harpenden Sorting Office was proposed early last year I have been in correspondence with Royal Mail and  have sought and received three key assurances which I hope will be reaffirmed:

o   First, that moving the sorting office will not adversely affect deliveries in Harpenden;

o   Second, that there will be reasonable facilities for people who are not in when parcels are delivered and customers will be able to arrange a re-delivery free of charge – either to the same address or to a different address in the same postcode area.   In addition, customers in Harpenden who have a Special Delivery, Tracked or Recorded item to collect will be able to do so from Harpenden Post Office free of charge.    The only circumstances in which people would have to collect undelivered parcels from St Albans are customers with PO Boxes or a surcharge/customs to pay.

o   Third, that there will be no compulsory redundancies of staff.    Staff will also be reimbursed for any extra mileage incurred by the changes to their place of work.”
