BLOCK PLAN FOR 1000 HOUSES ON THE GREEN BELT OR WORSE WILL FOLLOW, WARNS LILLEY

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, will warn local residents that Bloor Homes application to build a thousand houses on Green Belt land between Luton and Hitchin could be the thin end of the wedge leading to massive development.   He will urge people to make their views known at public meetings and by writing to North Herts District Council.

A series of public meetings begins this week at 7.30pm on Thursday at Cassel Hall in Lilley, which Peter Lilley will attend, where representatives from North Herts District Council, Keep East of Luton Green and the Campaign to Protect Rural England will argue that the development should not go ahead.

Peter Lilley said: “Bloor Homes have been thwarted in their ambition to build over 5,000 new homes east of Luton. Now they hope a smaller development around Cockernhoe will be approved.

“This would be a disaster. Cockernhoe, Tea Green and Mangrove Green would lose their separate identities and a large tract of beautiful English countryside would be lost.

“How long would it be before developers sought to add to the initial breach in Green Belt protection? It would be so much harder to fight off future unwanted development if this plan was allowed to go ahead.

“It is important that people find out what is being proposed and then have their say. I will be at Thursday’s meeting organised by Lilley Parish Council. Others are planned on at Cockernhoe School at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 20 January and at Breachwood Green Village Hall at 7.30 pm on Friday 22 January.

“All letters sent to NHDC before January 31st can be used in evidence at any future appeal, so I hope as many people as possible will write in.”
