PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday November 3rd 2009

LILLEY SEES TOUGH TIMES AHEAD AT WESTMINSTER

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, was invited to peer into his crystal ball when he spoke to a record turnout of the Harpenden Probus Secundus club at their autumn meeting.

He said: “I was asked to consider the political landscape awaiting the next government, and I had to emphasise the daunting problems that lie ahead.

“The biggest issue for any incoming government will be coping with the unprecedented deficit in the nation’s finances. Some very difficult decisions are going to have to be made.

“I drew on my experience of curbing expenditure in the social security budget – then by far the biggest department in government - when I served as Secretary of State, and tried to illustrate how it is possible to make major savings while still meeting our responsibilities to those who depend on government services.”

Peter Lilley went on to deal with a range of questions from members of the club, which is open to retired professional and business people in Harpenden.
