HITCHIN AND HARPENDEN NEAR THE TOP OF THE CLASS

Peter Lilley welcomed a study showing that his constituency is one of the most highly educated in Britain.   Research by the University and College Union showed that Hitchin and Harpenden is among the top fifty constituencies in the country, with over 44 per cent of workers educated to degree level or equivalent.

It does not do so well as far as the number of residents with no qualifications – 8.4 per cent – which nonetheless puts it in the 150 constituencies with fewest unqualified adults.

Peter Lilley said: “Hitchin and Harpenden used to have one of the lowest levels of unemployment in Europe but since the credit crunch the number out of work has increased sharply.

“These figures give me confidence that once the national economy revives, this area will be among the first to recover because people in Hitchin and Harpenden tend to be highly qualified, motivated and adaptable.

“Nonetheless we should not be complacent – in particular we need even more emphasis on helping those with no qualifications acquire them and enable others to upgrade their skills. Local colleges have as important a role to play as our universities.”

* The UCU research placed Hitchin and Harpenden in 47th place out of 628 parliamentary constituencies in Great Britain. Of the working age population of 51,200, 44.1 per cent had at least a degree or NVQ4 qualification; 8.4 per cent had no qualifications.
