PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday October 6th 2009

LILLEY CONTINUES FIGHT FOR SOUTHDOWN POST OFFICE

Harpenden MP Peter Lilley has been told by the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, that the Post Office is committed to replacing post office services to customers in the Southdown areas soon as possible.

The Southdown Road post office closed in January despite a campaign by residents, which was supported by Peter Lilley.

He said: “I was very disappointed at the closure of this much valued service, especially as the post office branch in Station Road near Batford had been closed only a few weeks earlier.

“I wrote to Lord Mandelson pointing out that the people of Harpenden would now have just one post office to cater for their needs -- the already overcrowded main post office at the other end of Station Road, near the High Street.

“He tells me that two additional staff have been recruited there and that overall queuing times have been reduced.

“I certainly hope this improvement is maintained and am confident that Harpenden residents will let me know if there is any further deterioration in the level of service they are offered by the Post Office.

“In the meantime, I look forward to hearing that the Post Office is making progress in its efforts to restore a full counter service in Southdown.”
