PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday July 7th 2009

LILLEY SEEKS ASSURANCES ON FUTURE OF VAUXHALL PLANT

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is joining forces with other local Members of Parliament to press Peter Mandelson to ensure that vehicle production continues at Vauxhall’s Luton plant.

He said: “We have arranged a meeting with the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, to impress upon him the importance of the Vauxhall operation to our constituents and the local economy, and to make sure he is doing everything in his power to keep the plant open.

“If any public money is made available to a new owner, it must be conditional on the company giving a commitment to continued production, and therefore jobs, in the UK.   At the same time, there should be some form of security for the taxpayer.”

Peter Lilley and Conservative MPs from constituencies around Luton are meeting Lord Mandelson at 11:15am Wednesday 8th July.
