PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday May 5th 2009

LILLEY INVESTIGATES BIG DROP IN HONEY BEE NUMBERS

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is visiting local beekeepers next weekend to discuss the threat to Britain’s honey bees.

He said: “Bees play a vital role in putting food on our tables. It’s estimated that they pollinate about a third of the fruit and vegetables we eat, but in the last two years, about 15 per cent of UK honey bees have died out.

“I shall be talking to members of the St Albans Beekeeping Association to gauge the level of concern and what priorities they believe government should have in trying to tackle this very serious situation.”

* Press welcome at St Albans & District Apiary in Prae Wood, off A4147, at 1400 on Saturday May 9th.
