LILLEY WELCOMES CATALOGUE OF COUNTY OIL PAINTINGS

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, will this week attend the official launch of a catalogue detailing over 1500 oil paintings in public ownership in Hertfordshire.

He said: “This is a fantastic initiative.   For the first time, people can see the terrific range of art which we own but which few of us know exist.   It shows where all the publicly owned oil paintings in the county are to be found.

“They are in art galleries, museums, council buildings, public libraries, schools and colleges – even a golf club. Together they provide a fascinating insight in the cultural life of Hertfordshire.

“I have been following the progress of this project for some time. It is the work of Dr Fred Hohler and the Public Catalogue Foundation, who are progressively publishing a county by county record of all Britain’s publicly owned oil paintings.   Being married to an artist I am naturally keen that paintings should receive the attention they deserve.

“This wonderful catalogue takes works of art out of basements and rarely visited corridors, and brings them to the attention of the general public. Until now, it was very difficult for anyone with an interest in art to find out just what paintings were publicly owned in Hertfordshire.”

The official launch of the Hertfordshire catalogue is at 1830 on Thursday January 29th at the Market Hill Rooms, Fish Hill, in Royston.
