PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

‘DON’T CLOSE ANOTHER HARPENDEN POST OFFICE’ SAYS MP

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has taken up the cudgels on behalf of residents in Southdown, Harpenden to stop the Post Office permanently closing their sub-Post Office.

The threat arises because of the closure of Balfours Newsagents and comes on top of the recent decision to close the Post Office at 107 Station Road, Harpenden.

“I have urged the Post Office to ensure that the sub-Post Office re-opens either under new management or possibly within Somerfield’s nearby store and have written to the Co-op, who own Somerfields and Balfours, urging them to include a sub-Post Office in their Somerfield site.   To lose this sub-Post Office as well as the one in Station Road would mean both the areas where the people who most need these services live would be deprived of access to a sub-Post Office” said Peter Lilley.
