PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday November 11th 2008

LILLEY PRAISES HARPENDEN CHARITY LINKS WITH AFRICA

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, praised the work of the Harpenden-based charity Spotlight on Africa when he attended its annual general meeting last week (Nov 6).

He said: “The establishment of Spotlight on Africa coincided with my involvement as chairman of the Global Poverty Policy Group, and it exemplifies the kind of initiative we wanted to see become more widespread -- where one community is directly involved in the transfer not just of money but of expertise, resources and enthusiasm to another. So much can be achieved at a personal and community level. It’s not all about governments and international organisations.

“Since it was formed two years ago, the charity has forged links with the village of Musoto in Uganda.   It has raised more than £26,000 to develop and support a primary school there, and is working on a number of other projects.

“The children at St Nicholas primary school in Harpenden are already linked with the staff and students in Musoto, and the Elms Medical Practice in the town is hoping to get involved with a nearby health clinic.

“I was very proud to be invited to become the charity’s patron.”
