PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Monday October 27th 2008

LILLEY PRESENTS AWARD TO TOP SILVER SURFER

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, dismissed the idea that modern technology was the preserve of the young when he presented 80-year-old Judith Taylor with an award for her internet computer skills.

Judith, from Wheathampstead, was a runner-up in this year’s British Silver Surfer competition and met Peter at the presentation ceremony at Westminster.

He said: “I am full of admiration for Judith’s achievement. Remarkably, she was given a computer only nine years ago, when she was 71. The idea was that it might help her keep in touch with her son in Australia, but in addition to that she has made it an extensive part of her life.”

Judith, a former secretary/PA, said: “After a few hours tuition I began to understand how the computer worked. I loved the challenge of working things out for myself and it keeps my brain alert.

“I have a blog called Not Dead Yet. It’s the diary of an oldie who refuses to die quietly and through it I have been in touch with hundreds of people all over the world. It goes to show that just because you’re getting on a bit, it doesn’t mean you’re not an interesting person.
