LILLEY TO MEET POST OFFICE MANAGERS OVER THREATENED BRANCH CLOSURES

- Wednesday, 16th July 2008

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has arranged an urgent meeting with Post Office management to discuss his concerns at the proposed closure of five post offices in his constituency. The meeting will be at the House of Commons next Monday morning (July 21).

He said: “I have serious worries about the impact of post office closures on the very people who need their services most – the elderly, the least well off and anyone without easy access to transport.

“I will also be pressing the Post Office to reveal what figures they are using to justify the closures as it seems to me that at least some of them are out of date.

“The branch at Waterdell Lane in St Ippolyts, for example, has changed hands since the information was collated and the figures do not reflect a substantial increase in customer numbers.

“The planned closures would affect very many people in all sorts of ways. The post office is much more than a commercial operation. It lies at social heart of many villages and districts.

“I shall also be attending the demonstration at Whitwell to protest against the closure of that and other rural post offices in my constituency – at 10am on Saturday (July 19).”

The Post Office is proposing to close four branches in North Herts – at St Ippolyts, Hexton, Whitwell and Blakes Corner in Hitchin –and one in Harpenden, at 107 Station Road, which serves Batford.
