Lilley presents Stop Luton Airport Expansion petition to Parliament

- Wednesday, 26th February 2003

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, yesterday presented the "Stop Luton Airport Expansion petition to Parliament ahead of his planned meeting with John Spellar the Airports minister. The petition has collected about 6,000 signatures from residents in Hitchin and Harpenden and the surrounding villages.

Peter Lilley said:

"I hope that ministers will take seriously the amount of local opposition to proposals to expand Luton Airport. I formally presented the petition to Parliament yesterday evening. This adds to the huge number of letters that I have already received from constituents in the last few months. It is vital that we continue to enlist even more support for the petition in the next few weeks ? and maintain the flow of letters after the presentation of the petition.

"Today I shall meet John Spellar, the Transport Minister with responsibility for aviation policy, to discuss expansion proposals for Luton Airport. I will emphasise Luton?s unsuitability to become an airport the size of Gatwick and the overwhelming opposition from local residents to the expansion plans.?
