Peter Lilley's Positive Policies for Parents

- Saturday, 26th May 2001

Dear Parent,

You are probably fed up with negative campaigning so let me offer six positive reasons to vote Conservative.

HELPING THE FAMILY?S BUDGET

1. Fairer Taxes. Conservatives will let couples with children under 11 keep both personal tax allowances even if one parent gives up earning. The unused allowance would be transferred to reduce the other parent?s tax bill.

THIS WOULD BE WORTH ?1000 A YEAR FOR MANY FAMILIES.

It will more than compensate for the abolition of your Married Couples Allowance and Mortgage Relief which, along with Gordon Brown?s other stealth taxes mean the average family now pays ?670 more tax than when Labour took office.

2. Helping the Under 5s. Conservatives will also cut tax on families with children under 5 by increasing the Children?s Tax Credit by ?200.

3. Helping the Caring Parent. Conservatives will pay Working Families Tax Credit direct to the parent caring for the child. 400,000 mothers will benefit from this.

IMPROVING SCHOOLS

We are fortunate to have good schools and dedicated teachers in Hitchin & Harpenden.
